{"id":1066,"date":"2009-05-14T04:57:00","date_gmt":"2009-05-14T04:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oilgae.com\/blog\/?p=1066"},"modified":"2009-05-14T04:57:00","modified_gmt":"2009-05-14T04:57:00","slug":"algae-co2-capture-in-coal-power-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/2009\/05\/algae-co2-capture-in-coal-power-station.html","title":{"rendered":"Algae CO2 Capture in Coal Power Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You are at: <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/\">Oilgae Blog<\/a><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.loyyangpower.com.au\/\">Loy Yang Power<\/a> has signed a memorandum of understanding with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mbdenergy.com\/\">MBD Energy<\/a>, a private Melbourne company whose algae-based technology will allow the brown-coal power station to cut its emissions of carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n<p>The technology provides an alternative to carbon capture and sequestration for all coal-fired power stations in Australia, and can also be used by other big emitters such as mining plants or cement factories.<\/p>\n<p>Under the deal, a $2.1 million display plant will be built next to Loy Yang by the end of the year. If successful, the second phase would involve a $23 million pilot plant in 2011, leading to the construction of a $300 million demonstration plant in 2013.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mbdenergy.com\/catalogue\/c10\">MBD&#8217;s process<\/a> involves capturing flue gasses, including carbon dioxide, from the power station and injecting them into circulating waste water to produce oil-rich algae.
