New Economical Algae Waste Water Treatment Option from ISU
Iowa State University has come up with a new technology that improves the efficiency of waste water reclamation. The new technology could be economical for small town waste water treatment.
Conventional methods use bacterial process that result in sludge with a foul smell and disposal issues. But this new method uses vertical conveyor belts which revolve in a continual loop cycling through the waste water and air. Multiple layers of algae grow on them and absorb phosphorus and nitrogen from waste water and carbon di oxide from air.
Another advantage of this process is that the algae can be re-purposed to be used as a fertilizer.
