SCHOTT’s New Oval Glass Tubes to Increase Algal Output
SCHOTT, in partnership with Heliae, has announced that its new oval glass tubes for photobioreactors increases the dry biomass output by more than 22%. An indoor study was conducted by replacing round glass tubes with oval tubes in Heliae’s Helix Seed PBR.
The study showed that oval tubes increase the overall output of algae by more than 45% as the oval shape reduces the total internal volume of the PBR tubes by 15%. The oval cross section increases the tube’s surface area that is oriented towards the light source. Hence, light reaches more of the algal culture thus increasing the output.
