Gather Great Ocean Group, a Chinese company, has planned to farm seaweed in South Australia and is spending tens of millions of dollars on infrastructure, research and new technologies. The company is in the process of extracting marine sugars from native Australian seaweed species to be used in high value products like pharmaceuticals, cakes, jelly.
The company will be constructing a processing plant near Millicent in the next 12 months. It has also commissioned Flinders University to research the native species and develop technologies that are likely to be approved by the government.
