Algae-based Wastewater Treatment
Treatment or remediation of wastewater using algae is called phycoremediation. There are two different systems of algae-based wastewater treatment. They are Waste Stabilization Pond Systems (WSPs) and High Rate Algal Ponds (HRAP), both of which are secondary treatment methods.
In the first type, wastewater treatment is achieved by mutualistic growth of microalgae and heterotrophic bacteria. The second type, High Rate Algal Ponds (HRAP) is a combination of intensified oxidation ponds and an algal reactor. They are shallow, paddlewheel-mixed open raceway ponds and provide far more efficient wastewater treatment. For optimal growth of algae, adequate amounts of nutrients should be supplied.
It is recom
mended to use those strains of algae which reduce the cost of harvesting during various stages of treatment. The costs and returns from using algae-based wastewater treatment are likely to be the highest when simple systems such as High Rate Algal Ponds are utilized.
Algae based effluent treatment plants are constructed and are operating successfully in many industries like breweries, dairy farms, paper mills, food processing, textile and leather processing, etc.
