Heliae Partners with Japanese Co Sincere for Astaxanthin Production in Japan
Now, this is getting interesting.
We all know that many sensible algae companies are moving into non-fuel markets while they keep trying their best on algae fuels, albeit clearly knowing it could take a long time before algae to fuels become a commercial reality.

What is interesting is that these companies have started forming cross-continental alliances for non-fuels
Latest in line is Heliae (owned by the Mars family).
Heliae is partnering with Japan-based Sincere Corporation, a waste management and recycling company, to form a joint venture to develop a commercial scale algae production facility in Saga City Japan called Alvita Corporation. The partnership will combine Sincere Corporation’s operational skill, distribution networks and knowledge of the Japanese market with Heliae’s proprietary algae production technology to supply natural astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant with broad health benefits, to the growing health and wellness market in the region.
Construction of the Saga City facility is planned to begin in 2015 and Alvita’s astaxanthin product should be available on the market in Japan by 2016.
As algae-based nutraceuticals such as astaxanthin, spirulina, chlorella and Omega-3 (DHA and EPA) start getting much higher awareness, one can expect to see more such strategic partnerships.
