Australian Project Capturing CO2 with Algae

Australia’s first CO2 emission reduction project using algae is being implemented at Tarong Power Station. The Queensland Government has allotted $ 1 million for the first phase of the project, which is on track at the South Burnett power station after successful trials conducted at James Cook University.

The project uses algae to capture the CO2 from the coal-fired power station. Using the Algal Synthesis process, the captured flue gas is injected into the waste water, which is kept in long plastic membranes next to the station. The captured CO2 feed the algae with CO2 and other nutrients.

The algae will then be used to produce biofuels and other high value products. It is expected that the project will capture about 700 tons of CO2 per hectare, when fully operational. It is also expected to produce one ton of algal biomass per day, 120 TPA of algal oil and 240 TPA of algae meal.

The first stage of the one-hectare Tarong Power Station facility is complete and the project is scheduled to be fully commissioned in 2012. The project was a joint initiative between MBD Energy and Queensland Government-owned Stanwell Corporation, the state’s largest power generator.
