“Measure Algae Fuels by Barrels, Get Success” – Heliae
“Produce algae fuels @ a barrel a day, you can compete with petroleum fuels”, says Karl Seitz, the Co-Founder of the US-based algae fuel company Heliae. In an interview during the Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference, Seitz told that their company is measuring success not in terms of gallons or liters but by barrels. This is because to replace aviation fuels alone, the world is in need of billions of barrels of renewable fuels .
According to Seitz their company’s initial goal was to produce one barrel per day per acre and at this rate only they can compete with petroleum fuels. In the effort of achieving this, they are going to use their proprietary algae strains that have been chemically altered for high oil yield and faster growth rate.
They use closed photobioreactors and patented extraction formulas and techniques for the extraction of the fuel products, proteins and carbohydrates. The company also focusses on the development of algal strains suited grow in different regions of the world.
