Researchers Develop Warning System for Early Detection of Algae Mass Culture Contaminations
Researchers at the Arizona Center for Algal Technology and Innovation (AzCATI) are developing an empirical model for assessment and prediction of potential impact of contaminations on overall algal culture stability and biomass production potential.
They are developing a rapid, sensitive monitoring and an early warning system with the help of state-of-the-art bio-imaging and DNA fingerprinting techniques so that algae mass culture crashes can be mitigated. In addition to development of monitoring and warning systems, the researchers are also working on developing innovative control measures, and ultimately a Best Management Practices Plan (BMPP) for prevention and treatment. The comprehensive BMPP, if developed, will be the key to achieve sustainable production of algal feedstock, and thereby enabling successful commercialization of algae-based biofuels and bioproduct.
