Baking Soda Boosts Bio Oil From Algae

Researchers  from Montana State’s Algal Biofuels Group theorized that baking soda added at precise stage can double the amount of oil produced from algae. Baking soda boosts metabolism, but only if added at just the right moment. In doing so, the researchers found their algae producing two to three times the oil in half the time of conventional growth models. The group of researchers  are now offering the process for licensing.

    Licensing baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate? That’s cheeky, maybe I could get a patent on water and carbon dioxide.

    So adding bicarbonate ions to an algea culture boost growth, who’d have thought it? Maybe exposing the culture to sunlight might boost growth as well.

    The only creative thing here is the realisation that some people might be daft enough to pay licensing fees for such an obvious technique.
