The algae biofuel developers Algenol Biofuels Inc., has announced plans of setting up a pilot-sclae biorefinery plant near its laboratory in Lee County, Florida. Algenol has the support of the US Department of Energy, local officials on the Lee County Commission and its strategic partners, including The Dow Chemical Company.

Paul Woods, Algenol’s Founder and CEO, said: “Having our Integrated Bio-Refinery and research laboratories all on one site will facilitate collaboration among our scientists and engineers and those of our partners, The Dow Chemical Company, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and Membrane Technology and Research (MTR).”

Algenol’s process uses carbon dioxide and seawater to produce ethanol using hybrid algae within clear plastic photobioreactors, using energy from sunlight. The company claims its system could produce 6,000 gallons of ethanol per acre each year, compared to 400 gallons per acre-year for corn ethanol. It also states that its process offers a carbon footprint across its life cycle that would be 20% that of petroleum.
