Phycal and SERAC Join Together to Build a Demonstration Plant at Hoover
SouthEast Region Algae Consortium (SERAC) which consists of a group of scientists working on algae biofuels together with Cleveland-based Phycal LLC – the algae -based waste water treatment experts , would build a demonstration plant on property near the Inverness Wastewater Treatment plant, where water would be used to grow algae
The proposed facility would grow algae and process locally produced sugars, wastewater and carbon dioxide into liquid fuels and other products. The proposed plant in Hoover would be smaller than the Oahu plant, the Ohau plant in Hawaii was apparently constructed over 40 acres .
SERAC would run the $9 million facility for five years, with hopes that the algae oil plant could be commercially acquired and expanded to a large volume operation capable of replacing petroleum-based oil with algae-generated oil products.
Hoover began using alternative fuels in its municipal fleet six years ago, with 196 cars using ethanol and 161 cars and trucks powered by biodiesel. The city also recycles cooking oil, which has yielded biodiesel fuel and prevented 32,000 gallons of cooking oil from being dumped in the county’s landfills. The city also used a startup Livingston plant to convert wood scraps trucked from Hoover into ethanol that was used to fuel some of the city’s police vehicles.
